Lorna Maseko reveals how she went from one of the first black ballet dancers landing lead SA roles to presenting to running her own business.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you were all grown up and why?

Lorna Maseko: I can’t recall specifically what I wanted to be, but I knew I wanted to be something unique and great. I guess getting into ballet, an art form I knew nothing about, awarded me that…

How do you feel about that now?

I’m really proud of everything that I have achieved, but I have such high ambitions to achieve even more – especially in the television culinary space, as well running my business Fabulous Productions, which I’ve been doing so since 2007.

If you did, did you do something specific to make that dream happen during high school?

I was lucky enough to have gone to an Art school, which helped enhance my love for the Art form even more…

Did you apply for any tertiary education courses after high school? If so, where and why?

I studied so many things, but never quite figured out what I wanted to do. It was only in 2005 when I decided to study a Bcomm in Business Management. I also enrolled in culinary school.

Are you happy with the choices you made following high school and why/ why not?

I’ve been happy with my career choices so far… although I think from a business perspective I wish I was a lot further than I currently I am… But I’m at it and I won’t stop…

Any advice you would give this year’s grade 11’s and matrics on their after-high-school plans?

You don’t need to have it all figured out now. The best thing you can do is discover what your passions are and learn how to make money from the things you love.
